About 160 miles from the Strip to Springdale, and most people drive it without lifting a foot off the gas — casino, desert, canyon. Here is where we get out: a red-rock state park most visitors never hear of, dinosaur footprints found by a man leveling a field in St. George, and a pioneer ghost town under the cliffs five miles from the park gate.

The straight drive is almost all interstate: I-15 north out of Las Vegas, past the turnoffs for Lake Mead, across the Moapa Valley, and through the town of Mesquite on the Nevada line. Then comes the surprise of the trip — about 30 miles of the northwest corner of Arizona, where the interstate drops into the Virgin River Gorge, a narrow canyon with walls hundreds of feet high on both sides. It took years to blast the road through and it still counts among the most expensive miles of interstate ever built. There is nowhere to stop in the gorge; just drive it in daylight and look up.

On the far side you are in Utah, and in Mountain time. Las Vegas runs on Pacific time, so a car that leaves the Strip at 8 and drives for two and three-quarter hours reaches Springdale at 11:45 on the clock and 12:45 on the phone. That matters more here than on most drives, because Zion rewards whoever arrives early.

From St. George you leave I-15 at exit 16 and follow UT-9 east through Hurricane and La Verkin, and the landscape changes by the mile — black lava, then orange cliffs, then the first white-and-red walls of the park rising at the end of the valley. Fill the tank in Mesquite or St. George: gas in Springdale costs more and there is none inside the park.

Stop 1 — Valley of Fire State Park

Mile 50 · a 30-mile loop off I-15 · 1 to 2 hours

Leave the interstate at exit 75 and within fifteen minutes the desert turns into something that looks like another planet: Aztec sandstone worn into flaming red domes, arches and waves. Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park, opened in 1935, and it gets a fraction of the visitors of the national parks around it, which is exactly why we put it on this list.

Drive in from the west entrance and head for Atlatl Rock, where a metal staircase takes you up to a panel of petroglyphs pecked into the rock more than a thousand years ago. Then take the scenic road to White Domes and walk the short, sandy loop through a slot canyon, or stop at Mouse's Tank, a short trail past more rock art to a natural basin that holds rainwater. On your way out the east side, look for Elephant Rock right by the road. There is a per-car entry fee at the gate, a little more for out-of-state plates.

Why we put it first: this is a morning park. By early afternoon the rock throws back heat like an oven, and the park closes some trails on extreme-heat days. Leave the east entrance on NV-169, run north through the farm town of Overton, and rejoin I-15 at exit 93 — you lose no ground going back the way you came.

Stop 2 — Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm, St. George

Mile 120 · 5 minutes off I-15 · 1 to 2 hours

In 2000 a retired optometrist named Sheldon Johnson was leveling a hill on his land east of St. George with a bulldozer when he turned over a slab of sandstone and found the underside covered in three-toed footprints. The farm turned out to hold one of the richest early Jurassic trackways in North America, and instead of moving the slabs, the city built a museum right over them.

What you see inside is the real thing where it was found: long lines of footprints left by dinosaurs walking along the muddy edge of an ancient lake, plus rare prints of dinosaurs swimming and even resting. It is small, it is air-conditioned, and children who are bored of the car are not bored here. There is a modest admission charge.

Then drive ten minutes into historic downtown St. George for lunch. The red sandstone tabernacle and the white temple are the landmarks; Ancestor Square and Main Street have most of the restaurants, and this is the last real choice of food before Springdale. If you would rather hike than read, Snow Canyon State Park, fifteen minutes north, has red and white sandstone, petrified dunes and lava tubes you can climb down into.

Stop 3 — Grafton Ghost Town, near Rockville

Mile 155 · 3.5 miles off UT-9 · 45 minutes

Five miles before the park gate, in the small town of Rockville, turn south on Bridge Road, cross the one-lane bridge over the Virgin River, and follow the dirt road to Grafton. Mormon settlers founded it in 1859 to grow cotton along the river; floods, drought and conflict wore it down, and the last families left in the 1940s. What remains is a two-story adobe schoolhouse and meetinghouse from 1886, a handful of homesteads and a small pioneer cemetery, all standing in a green bottomland under the cliffs of Zion.

If it looks familiar, you have probably seen it in the movies: the bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. Walk into the old schoolhouse, read the headstones, and have the whole place almost to yourself — even on days when the park, ten minutes away, is full.

The road is graded dirt and fine for any car in dry weather. After heavy rain it turns to clay; skip it then.

Arriving at Zion

Springdale sits right at the south gate, and the single most useful thing to know is that the park's main parking lot at the visitor center often fills by 8 or 9 in the morning. For most of the year the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private cars, and you ride the free park shuttle instead. Park in town and take the free Springdale shuttle to the gate, and you will skip the whole fight. The park entry fee covers a car for seven days. The famous hike, Angels Landing, needs a permit won by lottery in advance — plan it before you leave Vegas, not at the trailhead. For guided canyoneering, e-bike and jeep trips around the park, book the canyon tours and Zion-area experiences ahead; for the backstory while you drive, there is a self-guided audio tour for the drive into the park.

How we would time it

Leave the Strip at 7 Pacific. Valley of Fire from 7:45 to 9:30 while the rock is still cool, out through Overton and back on I-15. St. George by about noon Mountain for the dinosaur tracks and lunch downtown. Grafton at 3, into Springdale by 3:45 — check in, park the car for good, and ride the shuttle up the canyon for the evening light on the walls. Coming back, take I-15 straight through and gain the hour.

Booking the rest of it

If you are flying in, Las Vegas almost always has more flights and cheaper rental cars than St. George's small airport, and the drive is part of the trip. Compare EconomyBookings and GetRentacar, and pick a car with real air conditioning; the Moapa Valley in July is not the place to find out it is weak. Carry more water than you think you need — Valley of Fire has none for sale.

The three stops on a map

Stops in driving order. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

How far is Las Vegas to Zion National Park and how long does it take?
About 160 miles and 2 hr 45 min of driving on I-15 north and UT-9 to Springdale, the town at the park's south entrance. Adding the Valley of Fire loop makes it about 190 miles and 3 hr 30 min.

Is there a time change between Las Vegas and Zion?
Yes. Las Vegas is on Pacific time and Zion, in Utah, is on Mountain time, so you lose an hour driving there and gain it back coming home.

What are the best stops between Las Vegas and Zion?
Valley of Fire State Park at mile 50, Nevada's oldest state park, with red sandstone and petroglyphs; the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm in St. George at mile 120, with early Jurassic tracks left where they were found; and Grafton ghost town near Rockville, five miles before the park gate.

Can you drive your own car through Zion Canyon?
For most of the year, no. The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is served by a free park shuttle and closed to private cars. UT-9 through the east side of the park, including the Zion–Mount Carmel tunnel, stays open to cars.

Where should you park for Zion National Park?
The visitor center lot often fills by 8 or 9am. Park in Springdale and ride the free Springdale shuttle to the park entrance.

Now let us do this for your drive

Every stop above is one we would take ourselves — but it is our day, not yours.
