Ninety miles from the Piedmont to the High Country in under two hours, through the Yadkin Valley wine country and up the Deep Gap climb. Most people drive it straight through. There are three reasons not to.

This is a short drive, and short drives are the ones people waste. An hour and forty-five minutes feels like nothing, so everybody puts their head down and does it in one go — and misses the fact that they just drove through North Carolina's wine country and over the Eastern Continental Divide on the way to a college town in the mountains.

An extra three hours turns this into a whole day out, and unlike most of our routes, you could reasonably do this one and drive home the same evening.

Stop 1 — The Yadkin Valley

Mile 30 to 45 · a few minutes off US-421 around Elkin · 1 to 2 hours

The Yadkin Valley was North Carolina's first federally recognized wine region, and there are dozens of vineyards spread across the rolling ground between Winston-Salem and Elkin — most of them within ten minutes of the highway. Some are polished tasting rooms with a view down the rows; some are a family, a barn, and a folding table. Both are worth your afternoon.

Two honest notes. First, weekends in September and October are harvest season and the good rooms fill, so it is worth calling ahead or handling reservations before you leave — you can book tastings and tickets ahead for the places that ticket. Second, somebody has to drive up a mountain afterward. Decide who that is in the parking lot, not in the tasting room.

Stop 2 — Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro

Mile 60 · right on the route · lunch, 1 hour

Two towns facing each other across the Yadkin River, and more history per capita than anywhere else on this drive. This is stock car country in the original sense — North Wilkesboro Speedway ran from 1949, sat abandoned for two decades, and has been brought back to life in recent years, which is a genuinely good story.

The practical version: lunch downtown, then a walk on the Yadkin River Greenway, which runs flat along the water and connects the two towns. W. Kerr Scott Reservoir is about ten minutes west if you would rather look at water than storefronts.

Stop 3 — Deep Gap and the climb

Deep Gap

Mile 78 · the last 15 miles · 30 minutes

Between Wilkesboro and Boone, US-421 climbs about 2,000 feet up the Blue Ridge escarpment. It is a modern four-lane road, so it is not hairy, but it is steep enough that you will hear your engine think about it. At the top is Deep Gap, where the Parkway crosses overhead — pull off at the Parkway access and look back east at the Piedmont you just left, spread out flat and hazy below you.

Deep Gap is also Doc Watson's home ground, which is worth knowing while you are standing there. Then it is 15 minutes into Boone. If you are staying, an self-guided audio tour covers the King Street district, and Blowing Rock is another 20 minutes south if you have not had enough mountain for one day.

Leave at 10am and you are in Boone by mid-afternoon. In winter, do the climb in daylight — Deep Gap holds ice and fog long after the Piedmont has dried out.

What we would skip

Trying to hit six wineries. Two is a good day; three is a long one; four is a different kind of trip that ends in a hotel. And skip the urge to shortcut onto I-40 — it is not faster to Boone and you trade all of this for interstate.

Yes. It was North Carolina's first federally recognized wine region and most of the vineyards sit within about ten minutes of US-421 between Winston-Salem and Elkin. Weekends in September and October are busy, so reserve ahead.

Is US-421 to Boone a difficult mountain road?

What is at Deep Gap?
It is the pass where the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses US-421 about 15 minutes east of Boone, with a Parkway access and long views back down over the Piedmont. It is also Doc Watson's home community.

Now let us do this for your drive

Every stop above is one we would take ourselves — but it is our day, not yours.
