About 535 miles and eight hours of pine trees, billboards and brake lights. Nobody enjoys this road. Three stops, all within ten minutes of an exit, turn it from an endurance test into a day.

Let us not pretend. I-95 between Richmond and Savannah is a wall of pine, a hundred billboards for the same three attractions, and a stretch of North Carolina where the exits blur into a single memory. People drive it in one brutal push, arrive at nine at night, and complain about it for a year.

Here is the thing we keep learning on this road: stopping does not cost what you think. All three of these are inside ten minutes of the ramp. Add ninety minutes of stopped time to an eight-hour drive and you arrive later — but you arrive as a human.

Stop 1 — Petersburg, Virginia

Mile 25 · exit 52 · 45 minutes

Twenty-five minutes out of Richmond, so treat it as coffee rather than a meal. Old Towne Petersburg is a compact grid of 18th and 19th-century brick beside the Appomattox River, and Petersburg National Battlefield is right there for anybody who wants to understand why the Civil War ended where it did. The siege lines are a driving tour, so you can see the important part in half an hour.

Why so early: because the next 150 miles are the emptiest of the whole run, and you want everyone caffeinated and out of the car before it starts, not after.

Stop 2 — Florence, South Carolina

Mile 320 · minutes off exit 164 · lunch, 1 hour

Florence is the honest halfway point and it has quietly become a decent lunch stop — a restored downtown a few minutes off the interstate, with actual restaurants instead of the fast-food ring around the exits. There is a small art museum on the same block if you need somewhere to be for forty-five minutes.

This is the fuel stop, too. From here to the Georgia line the interstate exits get thinner and considerably less appealing.

Stop 3 — Walterboro, South Carolina

Mile 460 · exit 53 · 45 minutes, an hour short of Savannah

Walterboro calls itself the front porch of the lowcountry, and for once the slogan is doing honest work. It is five minutes off I-95: a genuinely old main street with antique shops and rocking chairs, and — the reason we stop — the Great Swamp Sanctuary, a boardwalk through blackwater cypress and tupelo right at the edge of town. Twenty minutes on that boardwalk after seven hours of interstate resets your whole nervous system.

It also sets up the last hour properly. You roll into Savannah at dusk with your legs under you. If Savannah is the point of the trip, book Savannah tickets before you arrive and put an self-guided audio tour of the historic district on your phone — the squares are best walked with somebody talking in your ear, not with a group.

Leave Richmond at 8am and you are in Savannah by about 6pm with three stops behind you. Leave at 7am if you want daylight on the boardwalk in winter.

What we would skip

South of the Border. We know. It has been advertising to you for 200 miles and that is precisely the trick — the billboards are the attraction. Skip the outlet clusters at Smithfield and Santee too, and do not count a fuel plaza as a stop just because you got out of the car there.

The three stops on a map

Stops in driving order. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

How long does it take to drive I-95 from Richmond to Savannah?
About 535 miles and 8 hours of driving. With the three stops on this page it is roughly a 10 hour day, which is still one day.

Where is the best place to stop on I-95 in South Carolina?
Florence at exit 164 for the halfway meal, and Walterboro at exit 53 for the last break before Savannah. Both are within about five minutes of the interstate.

Is South of the Border worth stopping at?
As a curiosity and a restroom, sure. As a stop you plan your day around, no. It is a billboard campaign with a parking lot attached.

Can you drive Richmond to Savannah in one day?
Comfortably, yes. Eight hours of driving plus stops fits in a single day if you leave in the morning. Splitting it overnight usually means paying for a hotel in a town you did not want to visit.

Now let us do this for your drive

Every stop above is one we would take ourselves — but it is our day, not yours. Change the departure time, the driving limit, the dog in the back seat, the EV that needs a charger every 200 miles, and the right stops change with it. That is the whole thing we built: you tell us the trip, we name the three good stops, with the drive math already done.
